Your draft feels like a mess. The story that once felt exciting now feels scattered, confusing, maybe even impossible to finish. You’re wondering if you’ve lost the thread, or worse, if you should just give up.

Don’t give up.

Getting lost in the middle of a draft doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re deep in the work. And the good news? There’s a way through.

In this episode, I’ll help you zoom out, find the heart of your story again, and get back on track. So you can turn that overwhelming pile of pages into a novel or memoir that actually works.

[05:04] Revisit Your Protagonist’s Core Desire

Ask yourself: What does my protagonist want? Focus on one thing and make it concrete. Even if your character wants something abstract, say, happiness, prestige, self forgiveness or self acceptance, it needs to be embodied in the world of the real, whether that’s a person or a situation that personifies that desire.

[08:07] Identify the Central Story Problem

Every story revolves around a core problem or conflict. When you’re stuck, zoom back in. Ask, what is this really about? What is the character struggling with at the deepest level?

[10:03] Summarize Your Story in One to Two Sentences

Who wants what, why they can’t get it, and what happens if they fail?
