Have a story you’re burning to tell but can’t figure out where to begin? Think other writers have it easier? You’re not stuck because you’re not a real writer. You’re stuck because you’re waiting to feel ready. And that’s exactly what’s keeping you from starting.

In this episode I’m sharing three practical exercises you can do before you outline, before you structure, before you feel ready. Because clarity doesn’t come before the writing. It comes from the writing itself.

Episode At A Glance

#1: Freewrite

No censoring, no pressure, no audience. Just write to find out what you have. Including word clusters — a specific technique for when you’re stuck trying to describe a place, a character, or a world. Write every association that comes to mind and let your subconscious lead.

#2: Write three scenes

Not just any scenes. The scenes you’re most pulled to write. Specific moments, specific images. Things that excite you. They don’t have to connect, they don’t have to be plot beats, and they don’t have to occur in order. Write where the energy is.

#3: Look for the common denominator

Read your three scenes back and ask: what do they have in common? A character. A relationship. A tone. A question they’re orbiting. That link is what your story is actually about — beyond the plot, beyond the premise, beyond what you thought you were supposed to write.
