Think of beta readers as your test audience. They help you see your blind spots so you can make changes that make your book more appealing to agents, editors, and ultimately the audience you want to attract.

In the early stages, and as you revise, writers are great readers because they can steer you towards craft elements that improve your skills But writers do not make the best beta readers. Beta readers should come in at the final stage –  when you’ve taken your story as far as you can.

Your ideal readers are avid consumers of the genre you’re writing in. And they should be able to give you candid, cogent feedback. To help you target the right readers, do a search on Amazon for titles in your genre and look at the reviews.

There are groups all over social – from Facebook, to Reddit, to Goodreads. Start engaging on these platforms, then make an ask.
